Teacher Team

Rodine ‘Dinkie’ Barends

Boys’ class teacher

Rodine “Dinkie” Barends has been an integral part of the Prince Albert Skills School (PASS) since its start in 2017. Prior to joining PASS, she gained prior experience in supporting disadvantaged youth while working at the local Path Out of Poverty Centre. Her passion for education and her commitment to the community have made her an invaluable asset to the school. At PASS, Rodine not only provides academic instruction but also serves as a dedicated mentor and vital support system for the students. Her dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive environment has fostered a strong sense of community among the students.

Beyond her teaching duties, Rodine plays a crucial role in the school’s day-to-day operations, ensuring that students’ needs are met. While PASS has made significant strides, Rodine recognizes the need for further growth and development. She is actively pursuing a Foundation Phase Teaching degree to enhance her teaching skills and better serve her students.

Kenneth Myburgh

Boys’ class teacher

Kenneth Myburgh was approached in 2020 to teach technical skills at PASS. While he relocated for several months in 2021, he resumed his role at the school once he returned to town. As a skills-oriented individual, Kenneth thrives at PASS, constantly introducing new projects for the boys. He now provides very good daily technical lessons, including woodwork projects, a garden maintained by the students, and various renovation and maintenance jobs at the school. He still has big dreams for the school and enhancing the skills program, focusing on auto mechanics, welding, and woodwork.

During his time at PASS, Kenneth has witnessed significant growth in both the school’s infrastructure and the students’ behaviour. Kenneth is passionate about sports and has discovered a love for coaching. While the school currently focuses on soccer, he envisions expanding the sports program to include rugby and netball, with regular matches against local teams.

Mariette Heskwa

Girls’ class teacher

Mariette Colleen Heskwa, a lifelong resident of Prince Albert, has been instrumental in the success of the Prince Albert Skills School (PASS) since joining the school in 2022 as the sole teacher for the girls’ class. Mariette has fostered a supportive and nurturing environment, empowering her students to overcome challenges and develop their potential. Starting with a small group of six girls, Mariette has fostered a strong sense of community and trust among her students. Through her guidance and encouragement, the girls have overcome challenges and grown into confident young women.

To enhance the school’s culinary program, Mariette’s dream is a fully equipped kitchen for the school. This will enable students to develop their cooking skills and generate income through the sale of baked goods. Mariette’s dedication to providing a high-quality education and fostering a positive learning environment makes her an invaluable asset to the school.

Hélène Smit

Founder and director

Dr. Hélène Smit, a renowned specialist in relationship building and conflict resolution, founded the Prince Albert Skills School (PASS) in 2017. Inspired by a report highlighting the struggles faced by marginalized teenagers, she founded PASS as a safe haven for these young people. From the onset, Hélène emphasised the importance of a safe and calm learning environment, focusing on the basic needs and psychological well-being of the students.

Under her leadership, PASS provides a supportive environment where students can receive practical education, develop life skills, and address their psychological needs. Drawing from her expertise in depth psychology, she prioritises the well-being of both students and teachers by fostering a supportive and nurturing environment. PASS has become a beacon of hope for the community, empowering young people and creating a brighter future for Prince Albert.
